Welcome to Kochi! URban Sustainability in Action Multi-Disciplinary Approach through Jointly Organized Research schools (URSA MAJOR) is thrilled to announce a week-long hackathon on sustainable city development: environmental scenario in the global south. We are offering a unique opportunity for students and young researchers to explore urban scenarios and contribute to sustainable city transformation. Participants will engage in Small-Scale Research Projects (SSRP), fostering a collaborative environment to learn, practice, and share knowledge. Jointly organized by the Nansen Environmental Research Centre (India) & Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (Norway) and supported by the Research Council of Norway. Join us for this transformative experience and be a part of the future of sustainable cities!

Small-Scale Research Projects (SSRP) will be supervised by leading experts in the field. Dr. Igor Ezau from UiT and Dr. Bindu G from NERCI will guide the Air Quality Monitoring & Modelling projects. Remote Sensing of Environmental Status will be overseen by Lasse H Pettersson (NERSC), Dr Ajith Joseph K (NERCI), Dr. Ranith Raj (NERCI), and Dr. Victoria Miles (NERSC). Barriers for Smart City Development will be addressed by Dr. Sobah Petersen, SINTEF and Dr. Alenka Temiljotov-Salaj, both from NTNU.


The program will also feature invited talks on various themes. Air Quality Monitoring will be covered by Er. Sreekala, Chairperson of KSPCB, Trivandrum, along with experts from the Air Quality Division of CPCB, Delhi, and Dr. Jaya Narayanan from IIT Kharagpur. Air Quality Modelling, including PALM and AERMOD, will be discussed by Dr. Igor Ezau and Christofer Mount from UiT, Norway, alongside Dr. Harish from IIT Bombay. Remote Sensing of Environmental Status will be addressed by Dr. Victoria Miles from NERSC, Norway, and Dr. Renith Raj and Dr. Ajith Joseph K. from NERCI, Kochi. Finally, Barriers to Smart City Development will be explored by Dr. Rajan, Head of C-Hed, Cochin Corporation; Dr. Sobah Petersen from NTNU, Norway; Mr. Clipson, GM of CSML, Kochi; and Dr. Alenka Temiljotov-Salaj from NTNU, Norway.

T&C: For Indian participants, accommodation, food, and travel expenses will be fully covered. International participants will receive local hospitality, including accommodation and local travel, but are responsible for their own flight expenses. Participants from URSA partner institutions are encouraged seek funding from their home institutions or URSA partners to cover flight expenses
