Urban Sustainability in Action Multi-disciplinary Approach through Jointly Organized Research schools

"URban Sustainability in Action Multi disciplinary Approach through Jointly Organized Research schools” (URSA MAJOR) is coordinated by the Nansen Center and funded by INTPART-2020 – International Partnerships for Excellent Education, Research and Innovation project of the Research Council of Norway.

URSA MAJOR seeks a holistic approach to urban nature-based solutions with strengthening access to digital communication and remote sensing. Our partnership strives to improve environmental education of civil engineers, ecologists, urban architects, managers and administrators – all those who are future stake holders of sustainable and resilient “Smart Cities”. “Smart Cities” is a rich and integrative sustainability concept. URSA MAJOR focuses on its socio-environmental aspects that are influential but still strongly underappreciated. We target digitalization of collection, storage, analysis and usage of the urban social and environmental information. Time for such an ambitious target has come. All data components are abundant and available but still underused in decision-making. Future stakeholders need education and training to handle this.

The primary objective of the project is to train future stakeholders of Smart and Sustainable Cities to work with urban socioenvironmental interactions in the era of climate change.

The secondary objectives of the project are to:

» Connect international, cross-disciplinary education programmes directed to climate change and environmental impacts in global cities
» Improve knowledge transfer from advanced research and high-resolution computing to higher education and further to stakeholders
» Increase influence of urban stakeholders on the content and design of educational programmes

Workpackages and main deliverables

D1. Arctic Frontiers and Stakeholders
D2. Review Smart Cities frontiers
D3. Project course on Smart Cities
D4. Road to the North
D5. Road to the South
D6. Digital training and eLearning

URSA-MAJOR will REDRESS EDUCATION AND TRAINING

» Involve multinational stakeholders to accelerate education and training for Smart City development.
» Accelerate data aggregation & modelling of Smart City development through enhancing inter-disciplinary resultsfocused partnerships.
» Redress education through research schools for a holistic approach to sustainability - by co-creating a network based structure.
» Prepare stakeholders & communities for sustainable Smart City ecosystems transformation into zero emissions - focussing on nature based renewable energy solutions.

Activities, Organisation and Co-operation

Our target group consists of future city managers, urban planners, civil engineers, climate and social workers, i.e., of stakeholders of the future sustainable and resilient Smart Cities. Although Smart Cities are already connected in an intricate network, their future stakeholders need better education; better understanding of socio-environmental indicators and more active promotion of sustainable nature-based solutions.

URSA MAJOR is organized in four activity work packages following the logic of Smart City nexus across different climate and social stratifications; the list includes: a review of urban sustainability barriers and challenges; the “Arctic Frontiers” conference; activities with the Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX); the online MOOC (http://www.mooc.no) course development; innovative digital communication tools with extended reality; field work and training; super-computer modelling; innovative remote sensing analysis utilizing EU COPERNICUS climate services. It synchronizes education and research with the actual needs of stakeholders through co-production meetings. The project coordination and management will be predominantly web-based. URSA MAJOR involves 4 Norwegian and 4 other institutions abroad.

The cooperation includes not exclusively: the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research, the research school for Climate Dynamics (via NERSC/GFI); Arctic Frontiers conferences and the FRAM center in Tromsø; the Nansen Society (via NERCI/NERSC); the Russian profiled higher education programme 5-100 – the 5 Russia Universities into the top 100 in the world (via TyumGU); the EU project +CityxChange (Positive City ExChange) – a smart city project by NTNU; Future-oriented Digital Learning Tools cooperation (via SINTEF Digital). It involves 8 leading persons and 6 principal participants with 50% share of females. The project activity will extend the Belmont Forum international activity. The Table below summarizes our activities.
